The State of The Eastern Conference 3003
-GM Dirty Joseph Dirte 10:52PM 3/23/03
Philadelphia 76ers Grade: A-
Draft Capital: 04/1.5 - 04/1.27 - 05/1.21 - 08/1.26
Bankz has built himself a monster of a roster. He was smart enough to trade into the 01 draft and take Carr. He was also able to get his hands on a 1.5 for Bol. He really did a heck of a job in the inagural draft drafting Ellis/Carr and then flipping Bol. He brought in some vets to complete the roster and won the 3002 TMBSL Championship. He has the record for most wins in a season and should have a decent shot to win B2B. His depth in the front court is ridiculous and should be good to go even when Magno decides to retire.
Indiana Pacers Grade: B
Draft Capital: 04/1.14 - 05/1.17 - 07/1.10 - 08/1.20
Some GMs don't like the team Heebs built but i do. I think Drexler and Mahorn are great pieces for a championship. He has a top 5 PG in Staten and i really like Blackmon Jr. He may need 1 piece to really put himself into position for .1 Fracs. He does have some draft assets he can go to if he decides even though the buyers market is a bit dry right now. If he can get that starting 5 spot locked up i really like his chances. Luckily for him that's probably the easiest position to find through the draft, especially at 1.14.
Brooklyn Nets Grade: A-
Draft Capital: 04/1.3 - 05/1.22 - 05/1.27 - 08/1.9
I really like what BK has put together in Brooklyn. He has stayed patient for the most part and has done some trades to get his team in this position. He is on pace for B2B 60 win seasons and has a great 1.3 for next season. If he can lock up that PG slot and get BPA at 1.3 he will be set for a long term run. I had questions on why he didn't take KD but only time will tell if he was right on that one. He has a solid young core with room to get better and i think we will see the Nets near the top of the Division for years to come.
Chicago Bulls Grade: B-
Draft Capital: 04/1.26
I don't like what Mike has done. He gave up too much for Gathers and Bojan and gave himself no room to get better. He needs a better wing and a back up big to really get more competitive. I do like him getting Chief but he just has too many holes. I do appreciate him going for it and trying to get something going but i think it just wasn't time. I would have rather him sit back and take that 1.1 pick instead of going all in. His assets are depleted and he should have about 5 years with this team, if he can resign his studs.
Cleveland Cavaliers Grade: B
Draft Capital: 06/1.7 - 07/1.6 - 07/1.20 - 08/1.24
Turbo had a bad run last FA and i bet he's learned his lesson. What's important is doing high 1 year deals and flip and keep your cap open from year to year. He has a stud in McHale and has 2 really good picks coming up. Some of his roster isn't his fault but lets hope he continue to learn and grow and builds a legit contender come 08. If he can land a big fish via FA and match him and McHale with 1.7 AND 1.6 he may have a stew going. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in CLE.
Toronto Raptors Grade: B-
Draft Capital: 05/1.6 - 05/1.26 - 06/1.22 - 06/1.23 - 07/1.13 - 07/1.14 - 08/1.10
I've been a bit harsh on delap after his firesale. He has a really good pick and a few solid picks but nothing to really get his franchise up and running. He will need some FA luck to get back to the finals. If he waits this rebuild out and drafts all the picks I'm not sure if that's enough talent to compete. I haven't seen delap work so i hope he has some tricks up his sleeves and throws this article back in my face.
Pittsburgh Pipers Grade: B
Draft Capital: 04/1.2 - 05/1.8 - 05/1.28 - 06/1.20 - 07/1.16 - 08/1.8
Ba has done enough not to get trashed in shout and is continuing to learn on the fly. I know Bankz was trying to get 1.2 and Llull and i'm glad Ba stuck to his guns. He has an amazing pick coming u p and should pair that with Llull and future assets to get a team started. He's been pretty quiet through the years and the next 5 years is crucial for the Pipers. I like what he's doing from a draft stand point and it's a bit unfortunate that Recker took a big dump after getting his illegal upgrades removed. He should be amnestied and Ba should have cap space moving forward.
New York Knicks Grade: A-
Draft Capital: 05/1.13 - 07/1.1 - 08/1.1 - 08/1.13
The Bojan experiment was a bust but that's ok. Ank was able to put pieces together and turn that into multiple #1 overall picks. He should have some time to chill and get his team ready for 2 amazing rookies. We will finally find out if Ank can make the rick pick with scouting. I am interested to see if he trades Hunt or he gets the Amnesty belt across the back. I hope Ank can put the puzzle together this go around because a lot of other GMs claim he's the best of the best.
Atlanta Hawks Grade: B+
Draft Capital: 08/1.11
JHB may only have 1 more run with this bunch. I know he has a 1.1 in 6 years so i'm unsure what he will do in the mean time. I know his team is getting older and if he can't break down the wall this year i'm not sure if he ever will. The next rebuild will be interesting, it will all depend on what he gets for his older players. Re-signing George will be a big step next season. I know he declined a big offer for Nash so i can't wait to see what he does in the future. The best news for ATL is they have a shot this year and he can worry about the rebuild later.
Carolina Cougars Grade: A-
Draft Capital: 04/1.23 - 06/1.6 - 06/1.12 - 06/1.16 - 06/1.25 - 08/1.29
20s is having an amazing 6.0 so far. He's had some good luck and has maneuvered his picks to get stud Luke Maye. He has a very young and competitive team and is doing the best job out of all GMs that haven't won a title yet. If he can keep this team together with Maye being an expiring, he should be a stout team for about a decade.
Charlotte Bobcats Grade: C+
Draft Capital: 06/2.1
Odin has run out of assets but has defiantly found his 2 D/R Bigs. Anthony and Williams are having great years and i think his team is better for it. Im unsure if Bootsy is the right guy for the job here but Estes is still a monster. If Odin ever decides to rebuild through the draft he should think about a firesale and get his team back on track. I think The Bobs are a good team but I'm unsure if he's good enough. Time will tell if his team can come through with only have non-scoring bigs.
Washington Bullets Grade: B
Draft Capital: 06/1.13 - 07/1.12 - 07/1.25 - 08/1.7 - 08/1.22
I think Yawn has finally decided he's not in a buying mood. After selling Ruland and Scott for a good pick he will probably chill out, throw some Maxes and make some picks in the coming years. With his bad luck in FA hopefully he can get lucky and grab someone good and start the rebuild a little quicker than usual. He will have a hill to climb but he has 3 decent picks that can turn his franchise around. He may just need to scout and pick the right guys to get the Bullets in gear.
Orlando Magic Grade:B+
Draft Capital: 04/1.16 - 04/1.18 - 05/1.7 - 05/1.18 - 06/1.1 - 07/1.21 - 07/1.23 - 08/1.12
Skrouse has really put some solid picks around him in the next 6 years. He has multiple 1.1s and if his patients hold should be great around 3009. I'm excited to watch this rebuild and i know skourse will do it the proper way. He can keep cap space open for FA and make the picks. He has some mid to late picks he could package to do what he wishes. He can get a player or maybe move up in a draft. The Knicks and Magic are on the same trajectory so it will be curious to see who has the better rebuild in 10 years.
Miami Heat Grade: A-
Draft Capital: 04/1.9 - 04/1.11 - 05/1.1 - 05/1.3 - 06/1.29 - 07/1.18 - 08/1.17
Ol Dukey is going to be having some amazing picks coming up. He should get CWebb and then another stud in the same draft at 1.3. It was sneaky impressive for duc to trade away Gates and grab a pick in the 05 draft to really get 2 of the top 3. He has some mid 1st he can add to those 2 and hopefully can make a run at having an elite team. If he can land some FAs now and then the East should watch out. I can't wait to see what happens in Miami. The Eastern Conference is stacked when it comes to teams with really good picks the next 5 years.
Charlotte Hornets Grade: B+
Draft Capital: 04/1.13 - 04/1.21 - 04/1.28 - 05/1.11 - 05/1.20 - 05/1.29 - 06/1.2 - 06/1.10 - 07/1.9 - 07/1.28 - 08/1.19
Mazunga or Fecta or whateva his name is has been a quiet GM just accumulating picks and dam it's impressive when you look at what he has. I'd bet he takes all these and you never know what happens with hidden gems and who could fall at his 1.2. If he can add to Shelton and pick the right guys, he can be in the mix in about 6 years. It's pretty wild that some of the non-active GMs have a lot of picks and could maybe pass some type A GMs that are rebuilding the next few years. Only time will tell what Fecta does but i think he's on the right path.
